Volleyball: A Dynamic Team Sport

Volleyball is a fast-paced, energetic team sport that is played both indoors and on the beach. It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in the United States as a blend of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. Today, it's one of the most popular sports globally, featured in the Olympics and played by millions of people recreationally and professionally.

*Basic Rules

  • Teams: Two teams of 6 players each (in indoor volleyball).

  • Objective: To score points by sending the ball over the net and into the opponent’s court.

  • Scoring: Matches are typically best-of-five sets. A set is won by the first team to reach 25 points (with at least a 2-point lead).

  • Rotation: Players rotate positions clockwise after winning a point on the opponent’s serve.

  • Serving: Putting the ball into play from behind the baseline.

  • Passing (Bumping): Using forearms to receive and control the ball.

  • Setting: Using fingertips to position the ball for a spike.

  • Spiking (Hitting): Jumping and striking the ball to score.

  • Blocking: Defending against a spike by jumping at the net.

  • Digging: Preventing the ball from touching the court after an opponent's attack.

*Types of Volleyball

  • Indoor Volleyball: Played on a hard court with 6 players per team.

  • Beach Volleyball: Played on sand with 2 players per team. It’s an Olympic sport since 1996.

  • Sitting Volleyball: A version adapted for athletes with disabilities, played on a smaller court with a lower net.
